Kari Bø explains the correct way to squeeze your pelvic floor and core muscles for maximum effect.
Here’s how to check you are squeezing the right muscles!
- As you’re getting close to the end of a pee, squeeze to stop the dribbling. The muscles you are contracting are your pelvic floor.
- While standing, press the flat of your hand underneath your perineum and then contract your pelvic floor muscles. If you are squeezing the right ones you will feel your crotch pulling away from your hand. Warning: Don’t do this when anyone is watching!
- Squeezing with your legs apart will make it easier for you to locate and concentrate on the pelvic floor muscles.
- If you’re still not sure you’re getting it right, ask your doctor to refer you to a woman’s health physiotherapist, who will work with you and make sure you are on the right track. Don’t be shy – they do this all the time – it’s part of their job!
